Prepare the Vehicles

You’re going to have two vehicles involved in the jumpstarting process—the vehicle with the dead battery and the donor vehicle. Position these two vehicles closely enough that the jumper cables can comfortably reach between them, and turn them both off, including any accessories.

Attach Red Clamps

Start with the red clamps. These are the positive charge clamps. Attach one red clamp to the positive terminal on the vehicle with the dead battery. Attach the other red clamp to the positive terminal on the donor vehicle.

Attach Black Clamps

Remember, you work in reverse when it comes to the second set of clamps. Begin by attaching the black clamp to the negative terminal on the donor vehicle. Then, located an unpainted metal surface on the vehicle with the dead battery, preferably away from the battery terminal. Attach the black clamp there.

Start the Car

Start the booster vehicle. The dead battery will need to be charged, so let the vehicle run for a few minutes before testing the dead battery. If it doesn’t work at first, try again after a few more minutes of charging.

Remove the Cables

You’ll want to remove the jumper cables in the reverse order from which you attached them. Leave your car running for 15-20 minutes to make sure it’s holding a charge. Even if your battery is in good condition after the jump, it’s a good idea to schedule an inspection, so you know if it needs future care.
