Tires may seem durable, but they don’t last forever. That’s why our Lexus service team is here to help. Our experts at Fields Lexus of Glenview have put together this brief guide on what to do if you get a flat tire on the road.
Pull Over to Stay Safe
If your tire goes flat while behind the wheel, the first thing you’ll want to do is flip on your hazard lights. Once other drivers are alerted, carefully pull over to the side of the road.
If you have cones or hazard signs, place them around you and your vehicle to ensure other drivers are fully aware of your presence.
Get Your Hands Dirty
When you’ve pulled over your car safely, place your car jack under your car and lift it so that the flat is roughly five inches off the ground. With the tire lifted, start removing the lug nuts using a lug wrench. With the nuts removed, pull the tire and hub cap free from the axel.
Now it’s time to fasten in your spare. However, before you begin securing the spare tire to your axle, you’ll want to check the tire’s air pressure. The last thing you want to do is ride on a spare tire that isn’t properly inflated.
Once you’re sure your spare tire is ready to go, secure it to the axel using the lug nuts. At this point, you can lower the vehicle and take to the road again. However, you should visit a tire care expert right away to either fix or replace your flat.
